APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL’S STANDARDS COMMITTEE

The Local Government Act 2000 required the Council to establish a Standards Committee and required that at least one quarter of the membership of that Committee was independent of the Council.  The Council had decided that the councillor membership would be six, and therefore two independent members would need to be appointed.  The Council had decided to establish a Standards Committee for the municipal year 2001/02 but, without the necessary independent members, it had not yet met.  The independent members had to be appointed by full Council.

The Sub-Committee interviewed four applicants for the position of independent member of the Standards Committee.  The Council was recommended that

(i)

following the interview of the applicants and the further clarification sought, the appointment of one independent member of the Standards Committee be made; and

(ii)

further interest in the position of independent member be invited.
